I must have watched the video a dozen times, two guys piling 150 lbs. of bacon, Yes, I said a 150lbs of hickory smoked, crispy bacon piled two feet high on a wooden slab right next to the pyramid of onion rings, chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, and other generous garnishes, all for the guests of a friendly midwestern bar to create their own customizable Bloody Mary.
I knew right then and there that I wanted to create a buffet like that for a party; any kind of party, New Years Day, Sunday Brunch or for the Super Bowl. So, I did. And it was EPIC – and FUN!
You don’t have to fry up 150lbs. of bacon for an Epic Bloody Mary Bar. Just make sure you have a great quality vodka or gin, mild and spicy mixers and a boatload of garnishes.
An epic Bloody Mary needs and epic vodka. We chose Skip Rock Distillers Badger Pocket Black Pepper Vodka for a nice kick. And don’t forget our friends at Blue Spirits makes a killer Pickle Vodka too.
And speaking of kick, don’t forget to spice it up a bit with some zesty hot sauces, horseradish, paprika, and Old Bay seasoning. Add some seasoning like garlic salt, celery salt or black pepper for a flavorful salted rim.
Take a cue from history by offering traditional garnishes such as celery, pepperoncinis, lemons, limes, pearl onions, baby corn, carrots, pickles and of course, the cocktail olive! And for Gawds sakes, DON’T forget the Dipples Pickles!
I picked up 5 lbs. of bacon and cooked it in the oven instead of frying. I could more easily control the color and the crisp without burning it. I also baked the wings, onion rings, corndogs and poppers for an over the top garnish that would make this Bloody Mary more of a meal, not just a cocktail.
Try this recipe for an Epic mixer!
- 1 48 oz can of tomato juice
- 3 TB prepared creamy hot horseradish
- 3 TB Worcestershire sauce
- 2¼ tsp celery salt
- 3 tsp garlic salt
- Tabasco sauce
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 TB celery salt
- 1 TB kosher salt
- Black Pepper Vodka, or regular vodka if you prefer
Mix the tomato juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, garlic salt and black pepper in a large pitcher. Season with 10-15 shakes of Tabasco sauce, or to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
To assemble drinks, mix the celery salt and kosher salt on a small plate. Rim your glass with the juice of a lime or lemon wedge, then dip into the salt mix and twist. Fill an 8-ounce glass to the top with ice. Add 2 ounces of black pepper vodka or regular vodka then top with Bloody Mary tomato mixture.
